And we can easily picture them having a conversation with each other, too&nbsp;<strong>(<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vmINGWsyWX0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>even though it would be a funny one for sure<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>. But what if our clock radio told our food processor to get that smoothie ready, for we are about to leave for work? Or our watch told our bathtub to run us a remedial bath&nbsp;because we\u2019re leaving our workplace with the&nbsp;first stirrings of a common cold? And think of a fridge, buying food articles once it runs out of them, using its own ewallet\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where we enter the domain of the<strong>&nbsp;Internet of Things <\/strong>\u2013 a domain ripe with opportunities for fintech companies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"84ab\">What is the Internet of&nbsp;Things?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Put <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">simple<\/g>, the&nbsp;<strong>IoT<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Internet of Things<\/strong>&nbsp;is a network of everyday devices, which are interconnected via WiFi access. Those devices \u2014 which can be anything from cars to coffee makers, from streetlights to shower cabinets \u2014 communicate. And that means, they share data to complement each other in smart ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly though: They are not mainly dependent on our input anymore. Modern IoT-capable devices use sensors to monitor and analyze routines and proceedings (and our habits) around them, evaluating them via algorithms. Once the device senses a need for its services, it takes appropriate measures. And as it\u2019s exchanging information with other devices in the cloud, the incentive to act can come from outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can come from far outside, that is. The Internet of Things is not limited to the user\u2019s own four walls. Many&nbsp;<strong>Smart Homes<\/strong>&nbsp;added together make&nbsp;<strong>Smart Cities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The possibilities of the Internet of Things are endless, basic examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our alarm clock rings in the morning while sending information to other devices in the house. The roller blinds react and open. Our food processor in the kitchen starts cooking breakfast. The bathroom heating system warms up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The traffic lights receive data directly from the nearby&nbsp;traffic. Smart cars, as well as the pedestrian\u2019s smartphones, communicate with their data. The traffic light knows then when to go green or red to keep traffic flowing smoothly. No need to press a button at the crosswalk, the lights sense when someone is waiting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Factories and facilities analyze the production. They measure the need for energy and water, transferring this information to power plants and waterworks. These, in turn, distribute their provision accordingly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restaurants await customers with their favorite appetizers. The selection is based on data they allowed their fridges to send to the restaurant. The bill goes directly to the customer&#8217;s smartwatch. And finally, the ewallet software installed on there provides the funds to settle it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The dimensions of today\u2019s Internet of Things are already significant. By now, the IoT devices in use outnumber the world\u2019s population.&nbsp;<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/3598917\" target=\"_blank\">Analysts at Gartner<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>are certain, that in the year 2020 a network of more than 20 billion devices will cater to our needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"511\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_StoryVisual_Orange-1024x511.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_StoryVisual_Orange-1024x511.png 1024w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_StoryVisual_Orange-300x150.png 300w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_StoryVisual_Orange-768x383.png 768w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_StoryVisual_Orange.png 1476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4673\">IoT and&nbsp;FinTech<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>International corporations like Amazon, Bosch, Samsung and GE already invest in the IoT vision\u200a\u2014\u200awith vibrant start-ups on their heels or even one step ahead. Now, traditional financial institutions as well as upstart fintech companies jump on the bandwagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s clear why they do it: Customers are placing more and more value on user experience and convenience. And many future applications of the Internet of Things require integration of financial services and fintech&nbsp;procedures. Smart fridges for example, that automatically order food once it runs short, or parking spaces, whose fees are paid for by our smart cars, need to be connected to their owner\u2019s bank account. Enhancing the basic payment applications coming with the device, branded apps by banking institutions could attract new customers. They could by offering high-security eWallets with more payment options, additional privacy settings <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">and<\/g> even loyalty programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the commencement of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/transferwise.com\/gb\/blog\/what-is-psd2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PSD2<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(Payment Services Directive), the legal foundation has been laid for third parties requesting account data, should customers agree with it\u200a\u2014\u200aa prerequisite for IoT and fintech startups challenging traditional banks. It\u2019s clear: The big institutions must react now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, banking would no longer occupy a different space than living \u2014 it would take place at home, linked to natural, everyday actions. Looking at the rise of internet shops and online banking, we can argue, that future customers won\u2019t leave their homes for banking if they don\u2019t absolutely have to. Convenience is king, and the institute providing the most convenient user experience in IoT transactions leads the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even when customers are outside their own four walls, the Internet of Things is within arms reach. IoT banking and fintech services make their lives easier. ATM machines give out money to them without the need for input. Long waiting times at the counter will be a thing of the past. The bank already knows, when you\u2019re coming along and shifts customers in line to guarantee quick service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as your credit card connects to your phone and your household, it will be a lot harder for fraudsters to steal your identity: Shouldn\u2019t there be the signal of the car or the washing machine of that user account nearby? Access denied!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7eaa\">eWallets, Blockchain and the Internet of&nbsp;Things<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Internet of Things is already growing around us, adding new smart devices to its massive IoT ecosystem by the day. Physical wallets start to look antiquated \u2014 except as containers for our driver\u2019s license and credit cards.&nbsp;<strong>Contactless Payment<\/strong>, powered by&nbsp;<strong>Near Field Communication<\/strong>, is likely to become the standard way how we conduct business. In Europe nearly half of all consumers already rely on&nbsp;eWallet<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>payment methods, says&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/650669\/average-online-e-wallet-purchase-value-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Statista<\/strong><\/a>. In the future we might not even need smartphones, laptops or tablets anymore: Wearables like smart watches or wristbands \u2014 and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-31042477\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>implanted microchips<\/strong><\/a>, for that matter \u2014 interact with Bluetooth beacons or WiFi access points to complete payments. Versatile ewallet and financial technology will be a crucial element of the Internet of Things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In regard to security, ewallet providers face great challenges. IoT networks allow interaction with user accounts and sensible bank data through everyday devices \u2014 cyber-criminals will not wait to jump at the opportunity. Any IoT ewallet worth the name will have to raise effective barriers against fraud and tampering. The designs and applications of IoT devices are manifold and in some cases depend on very delicate user data (think health technology). Providers of eWallets have to <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">adapt<\/g> the security strategies of their payment software accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A solution, that holds big promises for the Internet of Things in regard to security is&nbsp;<strong>blockchain<\/strong>. Blockchain was originally developed as an integral part of the cryptocurrency model. It is a distributed ledger technology, there is no central instance or data storage. A blockchain is a continuously growing record of so-called&nbsp;<strong>blocks<\/strong>, containing sets of transactions. All blocks contain a timestamp and a hash pointer linked to the previous block. As such, they are public and can be tracked down to the very first so-called \u201cgenesis block\u201d, the first transaction made in the chain. However, blocks don\u2019t give away the identities of the purchasing and receiving parties in a transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blocks, the sets of transactions, must be validated, before they are added to a blockchain. This is done via a specific cryptographical procedure. Each block poses a unique mathematical problem, a&nbsp;<strong>nonce<\/strong>. All peers in the blockchain system compete to solve this nonce with their CPU in a trial and error process. This process is called&nbsp;<strong>mining<\/strong>&nbsp;and peers working to solve the puzzles are called&nbsp;<strong>miners<\/strong>, accordingly. Once a miner discovers the right solution for the mathematical problem, it announces the validation to the network. The block is then added to the blockchain. Thus, validation is a decentralized process, that\u2019s very difficult if not impossible to elude. The blockchain is public, so tampering with a block would be apparent, as all peers have deviating records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_BlockchainVisual_Orange-1024x639.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100\" srcset=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_BlockchainVisual_Orange-1024x639.png 1024w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_BlockchainVisual_Orange-300x187.png 300w, \/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/18_internet-of-things_InArticle_BlockchainVisual_Orange-768x480.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2a0d\">Blockchain Flaws and New Challengers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts are certain that blockchain technology will gather pace this year as part of IoT development. Some of them raise the subject of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbvaopenmind.com\/en\/a-secure-model-of-iot-with-blockchain\/?utm_source=views&amp;utm_medium=article06&amp;utm_campaign=MITcompany&amp;utm_content=banafa-jan07\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>limitations<\/strong><\/a>. One example would be the&nbsp;<strong>Tangle ledger&nbsp;<\/strong>of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/iota.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>IOTA<\/strong><\/a>: It takes blockchain principles to the next level, banking on a system protocol with a different manner of processing. Tangle, a \u201cblockless\u201d distributed ledger, allows the parallel and simultaneous verification of transactions, as opposed to a \u201cone block at a time\u201d model. With IOTA, a cryptocurrency geared towards <g class=\"gr_ gr_30 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"30\" data-gr-id=\"30\">Internet<\/g> of Things usage, the Tangle technology&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@MartinRosulek\/how-iota-makes-future-for-internet-of-things-af14fd77d2a3+\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>is making up for the shortcomings of the blockchain<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"b5f5\">What\u2019s next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Performance concerns regarding blockchain and fintech will continue to occupy the industry in 2018.
